At a divisional staff meeting, my area talked about our roles as staff on campus. For whatever reason, someone brought up the idea of InterVarsity staff as “slayers”… Campus Slayers for the Gospel.
You might think we’re freaks, but we’re just trying to be symbolic here. Look at Paul in Ephesians 6. There’s a lot of metaphor in that.
While I do love my team and their imaginative thinking, I wasn’t sure what to think about “Campus Slayer”. When I think of slayer, my brain toggles between Buffy and the band that disguises themselves as “music,” death and everything dark. They both seem outdated, like mullets and LA Gear are outdated. As far as I’m concerned, a Campus Slayer, while fearless with its cause to fight spiritual warfare, could be all looks, pizzazz and a statement, like Buffy and Slayer. With a sword.
Although Paul’s soldier description is obviously according to his context, I still think we are “soldiers” for our time. So in our context, I think we’d look more like this…
This seems to be a more accurate portrayal of my team, I think. Less look, more raw strength and power sprinkled with love and joy (running through the veins).
Update: By no means does the violent imagery parallel to the way in which we conduct work on campus. Like I said earlier, this is strictly metaphorical to hyperbolize the ardor of what we fight for and believe, like encouraged in the Ephesians 6 passage. =)
